g-ton, to grant a feu disposition of the Moat Park for the erec-tion of a Church, a Manse, and a Schoolhouse. This applicationwas successful. The ground thus obtained is very suitable forthe purpose intended. It is ample in extent, central in posi-tion, free from all obstructions, commands a fine view to thenorth and south, and is skirted on the east by a row of thefinest beech and elm trees to be found in the country. The plans of the new edifice were prepared by Messrs Peddieand Kinnear, Architects, Edinburgh, and the foundation stonewas laid on the 26th of June 1865. On that occasion thecongregation, along with a number of ministers and friendsfrom a distance, assembled in the old Church, when an eloquentdiscourse was delivered by Dr J. B. Johnston, Duke Street,Glasgow, on Luke xv. 2. The whole company was thenformed in processional order, and headed by Dr Smith, thepastor of the congregation, walked to the site of the newbuilding, when the cxviii. Several documentsand coins having been deposited in the cavity of the stone, theformalities usual on such occasions were gone through, and anable and appropriate address was delivered by W. G. Mitchell,Esq. of Carwood, a leading member of the congregation. Aftergiving three cheers for the continued success of the undertak-ing, the proceedings terminated. The Church was opened for divine service on Wednesday the27th of June 1866. The attendance on that occasion waslarge, and comprised many of the local gentry, a number ofclergymen of different denominations, &c. A talented andimpressive discourse was delivered by Dr Cairns of Berwick onthe 8th and 9th verses of the 55th chapter of Isaiah. Thecollection amounted to £211, which, with the sum previouslycollected, was sufficient to defray the whole expenses of thebuilding, amounting to £1400.
