Summary[edit]
DescriptionBig Pit National Coal Museum - geograph.org.uk - 312459.jpg |
English: Big Pit National Coal Museum Taken on a miserable day, the pit head lift gear can be seen as well as some of the supporting buildings. Once employing over 1000 miners, the mine closed in 1980 only to reopen three years later as a museum. The star attraction of this museum is a 50 minute tour down the mine itself, one of the few places it's possible for the public to actually go down a pit to see what it was like. What's more, it's all free!
The nickname Big Pit was attributed to the mine because of the elliptical nature of its mine shaft, being the first in the area to be able to lift two trams of coal side by side. It was also the first pit in the area to be electrified, though the winding gear was still powered by steam until 1953. The mine grew in size not only by its own workings, but also by taking over other nearby mines and extracted coal from an area of about 12 square miles. There were literally hundreds of mines like this in South Wales, but today none remain. Most of the tour guides and workers at the museum are retired miners and provide a unique perspective on a now lost profession. |
