Description |
English: Scarves are tied around wooden poles near a creek, bordered by low vegetation and rolling hills. Big Hole National Battlefield was the site of a battle on August 9-10, 1877 between the U.S. Army with Montana citizen volunteers and the Nez Perce people. It was part of a five-month conflict during which the army pursued about 750 men, women, and children across 1,170 miles from Oregon to northern Montana in an attempt to force the Nez Perce to the Lapwai Reservation in Idaho. This battle was a critical event, and although it was considered a tactical victory for the Nez Perce, the losses they suffered in the pre-dawn attack contributed to their ultimate defeat two months later.
