Description |
English: The granite, rectangular base of a monument bears the inscribed names of U.S. soldiers killed in battle. Big Hole National Battlefield Site. The monument was placed near the siege area in 1883, marking the end of the period of historical significance (1877-1883). It bears an inscription that honored the U.S. soldiers who died, yet made no mention of Nez Perce casualties. The monument illustrates the nationalistic sentiment of honorable sacrifice of the time. The site is now recognized as both a historic site and as a memorial to those on both sides who lost their lives in the battle.
