Description |
English: Wooden poles in flat prairie demonstrate the possible site of a lodge. Big Hole National Battlefield. Lodge at the northern edge of the Nez Perce camp, looking north. The Nez Perce had arranged their 89 lodges beside the river, where they intended to camp for several days. In the early hours of August 9, 1877, nearly 200 men of the 7th U.S. Infantry led by Lt. Colonel John Gibbon overtook the Nez Perce as they camped on the quiet banks of the Big Hole River. The men, women, and children in the lodges were awoken with gunfire and fled to the surrounding terrain.
