A major player on Buffalo's now-booming craft beer scene, Big Ditch traces its history back to 2011, when Matt Kahn and Corey Catalano, co-workers at a biotech lab, partnered with seasoned ex-brewery owner Wes Froebel on a new venture that, with both its name and its product, would "embody the spirit of the men that built the [Erie] Canal with their bare hands... innovative, flavorful and drinkable". Three years later, the ribbon was cut on their 15,000-square-foot facility, retrofitted into a 1977 building that was constructed as a Buffalo Fire Department alarm office and later served as a fleet maintenance facility for Verizon. There, Big Ditch brews three "signature" and over a dozen seasonal and limited-release beers that can be enjoyed at the onsite taproom and restaurant, at other area eateries, and in cans and bottles at local stores.
