mentsspent a total of $259,786.19 for medical care for needy persons. The amount spent for 1945-46 was $295,740.33. Several countiesmake practically no provision for the medical care of needypersons except for emergency situations. The larger portion of the amount spent for medical care inNorth Carolina is provided by a few large urban counties where itis not as difficult to provide tax money for this purpose as it is inrural counties. Although the General Assembly of 1945 author-ized the Medical Care Commission to spend $500,000 a year forhospitalization of indigent patients the money had not becomeavailable at the end of the biennial period. It appears, however, that since the charges for hospitalization have greatly increasedin North Carolina in recent months that when this money is madeavailable, it will not provide hospitalization for a larger numberof needy patients but will only help to take care of some of theincreased charges for hospitaization.
