Replacing piles, caps, stringers and decking on the north side ofPiers 7 and 37, between Piers 41 and 45 and on both sides of Pier 34. For some time there has been increasing evidence of the neces-sity for making repairs to the track girders in the older reinforced con-crete piers. The most urgent of this work was undertaken in 1933and 1934 and included portions of Piers 28, 29, 30, 32. 33, 35, 37, 39and 41 and the adjacent wharves. REPORT OF BOARD OF STATE HARBOR COMMISSIONERS 19 up the beams with gnnite reinforced with wire fabric and water-proofing with hot asphalt. The repairs covered a total of 41,400 linealfeet of beams. The work was done by contract, the cement beingfurnished by the board. Other maintenance which was contracted included the roofing ofPiers 7 and 20 and a portion of the Ferry Building and the white-washing of Piers 3, 20, 34 and 39. A new 160 horsepower diesel engine was installed in the tugGovernor Stephens to replace the old 135 horsepower engine. Theincreased power and dependability of the new engine have materiallyimproved the service of the tug in the towing of piledriver equipmentand construction materials. 5. DREDGING During the biennium our two dredges were each in operation twoshifts per day but on reduced time, to which further reference will bemade. Every effort was made to maintain the necessary depth ofwater in the slips and this was accomplished with but few complaintsfrom the
