The efficiency of the electrical department in safeguarding the waterfront against disastrous fires has been increased by the appointment ofan experienced fire marshal and by the installation of fire-fightingapparatus. Eleven fire monitors have been placed on the roof of theFerry Building and adjoining buildings, and 4,000 feet of 2^-inch hosehas been provided and mounted on thirty hose racks located in differentparts of the building. High pressure fire mains have been installed on Piers 35 and 37, with1,000 feet ^f 1 J-inch hose mounted on ten hose racks on each pier, andeach system is provided with cdnnections for the city fire engines andfire boats, as well as being permanently connected with the SpringValley Water Companys water mains. Contracts have been let andwork is proceeding on the installation of similar systems on Piers 3, 29, 31, 33, and 46,

46 REPORT OF BOARD OF STATE HARBOR COMMISSIONERS. Each pier is equipped with a 40-gallon portable chemical tank andthe system of fire alarm boxes is being extended as is required. The fire marshal makes periodical inspections of all fire equipmentand also of all structures with a view to eliminating all fire hazards asfar as possible. The hose is taken down and tested at intervals in orderto be sure that it is always in first-class condition. 7. Dredging. The regular dredging has been carried on as usual and the necessarydepth of water has been maintained in all slips. In addition, extensivedredging operations have been necessary in the slips adjacent to thepiers which have beeji recently constructed. The new fishermenslagoon has been dredged so as to provide sufficient depth of water forthe steam fishing tugs.
