Juan Pérez de Pineda, reformador español.

Juan Pérez de Pineda nació en Montilla a finales del siglo XV. Fue funcionario imperial en Roma en tiempos del Emperador Carlos I y más tarde, profesor de teología en Sevilla. Al ser identificado por la Santa Inquisición como simpatizante de la Reforma de Lutero, tuvo que huir de España para refugiarse en Ginebra. Allí se entregó a la labor de traducir el Nuevo Testamento al castellano, siendo publicada su traducción en 1556. Casiodo de Reina utilizó su traducción del Nuevo Testamento como ayuda adicional en la traducción que él mismo hizo de toda la Biblia al castellano y que publicó en 1569. Fue pastor de congregaciones de refugiados españoles en Suiza, Francfort (Alemania) y Blois (Francia). Su traducción del Nuevo Testamento fue distribuida en España por Julián Hernández (Julianillo), quien al ser descubierto por la Inquisición, fue apresado y encarcelado en Sevilla en 1557. Tras tres años de tortura para que delatase a todos los “herejes”, Julián Hernández fue quemado en Sevilla el 24 de diciembre de 1560 junto a otros 13 reformados. Al no poder ser apresado por la Inquisición, Juan Pérez de Pineda fue quemado en estatua, junto con las efigies de los doctores Juan Gil y Constantino Ponce de la Fuente, en el mismo auto de fe en que fue ejecutado Julián Hernández. Juan Pérez murió en París en 1568 revisando la impresión de algunos libros. En su testamento instruyó que se vendiesen todos sus bienes para ayudar a la impresión de la Biblia en castellano.
