Summary[edit]

Description

Beverley refuse collection vehicle, circa 1940. An image from one of the old Beverley Borough photographs showing a refuse collection vehicle parked with horse outside Norwood House, Norwood, Beverley. The gentleman stood alongside the horse, known as the ‘Horseman’, is Mr.R.Skinner, who looks very jovial and proudly poses for the photograph with his hands thrust in the pockets of his boilersuit. Note the written information posters on the vehicle stating ‘You cannot live without water, don’t waste it!’ and ‘Salvage more used cardboard and paper’ Perhaps a clear indication to conserve and recycle resources way back then! While sources appear to indicate this was taken around 1936, the style of the posters suggest it may be from around the Second World War.
