Description
English: Hans Baluschek, Kriegswinter (Wartime winter), oil on canvas, 1917. The grief of those who remained behind, but also the patriotism and loyalty towards the fatherland characterise the home front as portrayed in this painting. The small cruiser Emden, sunk in 1914, was a symbol of German bravery; the young man is wearing a hat strap from this ship. In the background the freight trains and industrial plants symbolize an unbroken economic strength.
