Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Former electric substation at Alte Jakobstraße No. 91 in Berlin-Mitte. It was constructed around 1905 to a design by Franz Schwechten. The facility was used for the transformation of rotary current, produced in the power plants Oberspree and Mobait, into direct current for end use. The height of the building corresponded with surrounding apartment buildings (not preserved). Schwechten designed a representative facade for the complex with grey tephrite on the ground floor and brick on the upper floors as well as a strictly vertical structure accentuted by pillars. After the demolition of a backyard building, architect Hans Müller constructed a new machine hall for the complex, situated near Neue Grünstraße. He combined elements of Schwechten's building with more contemporary concepts of architecture. The front building on Alte Jakobstraße is now used as an administration building by the power company Vattenfall. The whole complex has been designated as a historic landmark.
