The Shields Daily News for 24 June 1907 reports:
“BREAKING INTO A TOBACCONIST’S SHOP AT NORTH SHIELDS
At North Shields Police Court today, Thos. Foreman (20), Little Bedford Street; Benjamin Garrett (19), Trevor Terrace, and George Lowe (19), Stanley Street West, were charged with breaking and entering the shop, 88 Bedford Street, and stealing therefrom a quantity of cigars and cigarettes, value 12s 6d, the property of John Foster, on the 22nd inst. The prosecutor stated that he’d locked up on Saturday at 11.20 pm and at 3.30 the following morning he was called to the shop and found that the window had been broken and the goods mentioned stolen.
PC Fraser stated that at 1.30 am on Sunday, by the instruction of Sergt. Charlton, he concealed himself in the lane near the shop, and saw Garrett go to the window and help himself to cigars and cigarettes.
Sergeant Charlton said he saw Lowe and Foreman loitering in front of the shop. Witness concealed himself in a doorway and heard a crash of glass. The two men bolted when they saw him, but he caught Foreman, searched him and found tobacco and cigarettes in his pocket. The prisoner told him he had made it up with other two in Bennett’s house in Church Way to break into the shop. Witness apprehended Lower at 10 Stanley Street and found cuts upon his knuckles and some cigarettes in his inside pocket. When jointly charged Foreman replied that he got some cigarettes but did not break the window. Garrett said he was not there at the time and Lowe replied “Yes”.
Accused were each committed for seven days with hard labour.”
