Summary[edit]

Description Benary cross, an optical illusion found by w:Wilhelm Benary. The triangle in the corner of the cross appears darker than the triangle on the cross although both are of the same shade of gray and have the same shades of gray at their boundaries (thus it's not a case of w:lateral inhibition). The effect is explained by the so-called belongingness: One triangle belongs to the cross, while the other belongs to the background, on which it appears darker.
