commercial system wasopened to traffic between New York and London. The nextyear brought a second circuit on this New York-London routeand two circuits between Europe and South America. Themap, Fig. 1, shows in solid lines the lace work of internationaltelephone circuits which exists today and with dotted lines theadditional circuits in prospect. These invisible speech high-ways extend the scope of telephone service so that a UnitedStates subscriber may now be connected with about 33,000,000other telephones in the world which constitute 91 per cent ofthe worlds telephones. The value of these circuits lies in their ability to tie togetherthe existing continental wire networks into a world telephonenetwork. Thus, one of the first problems was to accomplisheffectively the junction of space transmission and wire trans-mission of speech.
