Londoyi was the first foreign metropolis to be brought within reach of the Bell Systetns overseas telephone service This was delicate and difficult workin lands where telephone equipmenthad been ruined, experienced person-nel had been dispersed, materials andmoney were scarce, and major politi-cal changes were being made. In 1947, earlier plans to expandthe network of circuits and to securebetter and speedier service for thecustomer were revived. Even be-fore the war, it had been realizedthat good service required direct cir-cuits to many additional countries,particularly those offering large vol-umes of traffic. The first step in thisprogram had taken place in Decem-ber, 1936, when Paris and New Yorkwere interconnected directly, the original routing via London beingretained only as an alternative. In the post-war years, the numberof direct routes has been so increasedthat today almost two-thirds of thecountries and territories reached byoverseas service are linked directly tothe Unit
