Conveyors^ used to ynove synthetic rubber from one operation to another^ make an unusual ■pattern in Westerns Point Breeze Works sulated with synthetic rubber, coveredwith a heavy cotton braid saturatedwith asphalt compound, and toppedoff with layers of pitch, mica flakes,and anti-stick solution. Then a farbetter type, known as C was intro-duced, using synthetic rubber as in-sulation and neoprene for the jacket.To produce the huge quantities ofdrop-wire required. Western Electricengineers designed and set up one ofindustrys most efficient shops forprocessing synthetic rubber. Rawmaterials move by conveyor to bigmixers, where they are mixed andtimed automatically. The insulating and jacketing compounds move fromone step in the process to another byoverhead conveyors, and finally arewound in big coils beside the extrud-ing machines, where the coverings areplaced on the copper-coated steelwires. Tests have indicated that Cs su-perior resistance to abrasion, sunlight,and general weather
