telephoto and teletypewriter. Within the U.S., the network is a combina-tion of microwave and cable. The overseasportion consists of deep-sea cables and highfrequency radio links. The hub of this vasttracking and communications complex,called NASCOM, is NASAs Goddard SpaceFlight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The network ties together 18 communica-tions and tracking stations around the world,including three ships on the high seas. Atthese stations, radar and telemetry equip-ment track the Gemini spacecraft and acquiredata on the performance of its componentsand its occupants. Radio, telephone and tele-typewriters funnel this information to God-dard. High-speed computers at Goddard,each with realtime capability, use the rawdata to make constant flight contingencyrecommendations, predict flight path, and de-termine the time to initiate re-entry—ail ona near-instantaneous and continuous basisthroughout a mission. Through this system, theheart of the entire network, pass messagesbetween operators around the world. At thetouch of a button, the system reaches in-stantly into overseas support stations suchas Woomera, Australia; the Canary Islands;and Johannesburg, South Africa. The entire network homes-in on a largeSCAMA console at Goddard. The consoleprovides push-button voice contact with asmany as 220 worldwide stations . . . everystation needed to handle any contingencycan be instantly called upon. It also allowsfor unlimited conferencing—operators canset up simultaneous conference calls withany or all of the network stations.
