The Indian Hill Laboratory, nearChicago and Western Electrics Haw-thorne Works, is devoted to develop-ment of the electronic switching sys-tems that ultimately will replace theelectromechanical systems now in thenations communications network. Meanwhile, Western Electric is ex-panding its production facilities in theSouthwest. The new Phoenix, Arizonaplant, which will manufacture wireand cable products for Bell com-panies, will become WEs 15th majormanufacturing facility when it openslate this year. Initially, the Phoenix plant will pro-duce up to 42 billion conductor feetof cable a year, and will ultimatelyhave an annual capacity of approxi-mately 70 BCF. When fully opera-tional, the plant will employ nearly1,000 persons, most of whom will berecruited locally. Training of newmachinists is already in progress.
