ming July. Fin-land, which is now reached by meansof a switched connection in Sweden, will be served by a direct circuit fromNew York. The distances spanned by overseastelephony are vast. The path fromNew York to Buenos Aires, for ex-ample, stretches 5,300 miles, while that from San Francisco to Sydney,Australia, extends 7,400 miles. Thetotal mileage in an overseas connec-tion is often much greater than theoverseas link alone, because the voicemay be carried over long distancesby land lines at either end of thetransoceanic circuit. For instance, acall from the United States to Bom-bay, which is reached by connectingtwo radiotelephone channels atLondon, goes 8,000 miles eastwardfrom New York, but if the callingparty is in San Francisco, 3,000more miles have to be added to thecircuit. Improved Methods of Operation Because of factors which are pe-culiar to overseas operation, it isdifficult to have service always asspeedy, reliable, and easy to use asour own domestic long distanceservice.
