Operation A closer conception of the details of operation of this servicemay be of interest and the principal features, involving thetelephone itself, are illustrated in Figure 3. The five keysare marked from left to right, 1, 2, H, L, B, and are used toestablish a connection with either one or two central office lines,to hold an outside call while it is being transferred, to connectto the intercommunicating line and to signal other stations. Incoming calls are signaled by bells—those on the two out- 79 BELL TELEPHONE QUARTERLY side lines being arranged to give different tones to indicatewhich line is calling. To answer an incoming call one liftsthe hand set and presses key 1 or 2, depending on which lineis being used, and then talks. Code signaling is usually em-ployed for this purpose. The person at the other stationmay first answer on the intercommunicating line and the personat the calling line station advises that there is a call waiting on 80 A NEW SERVICE line 1 or 2. The second station then goes in on the designatedline by pressing the key associated with that line and the firststation then hangs up, thus making his station available forother calls. As an optional feature, a small attractive lamp placed nearthe telephone may be employed to indicate a busy outside line.For example, if a person should press key 1 to make a call andline 1 was busy, the lamp would light, and he would then placehis call on line 2.
