Before 1913, a number of the BellSystem companies had informal prac-tices which provided financial assist-ance in connection with disability anddeath and which assisted in varyingdegree those long-service employeeswho, because of age or other infirm-ities, were unable to continue on ac-tive duty. In other instances, someprotection was provided by mutual-benefit associations or through similaremployee activities—with or withoutcompany participation. A few ofthe older companies had somewhatuniform practices in effect which madesome provision for retirement, andone company had adopted a formalretirement plan as early as 1906. The Plans adopted in 19 13 by theBell System companies provided uni-formly substantial benefit and pensionprotection; and, through interchange agreements, they en-abled employees tomove from one com-pany to another in
