Text Appearing Before Image:
the end wouldntjustify risking the lives of men. Thecrew would be in great danger atmany points from snowslides thatwould start at a whisper, as well asfrom the chance of upsetting the vehicle on the heavily drifted shelfroads skirting perilous cliffs. The Cat is able to carry four menin an aluminum cab which is com-pletely inclosed to shield them fromthe weather. It contains a heater andsleeping bags, air mattresses andfood supplies for emergency. Whenneeded, a ski-equipped trailer capableof carrying over a ton of supplies canbe towed behind. But the Cat was unable to travelon the steeply inclined snow where ithad drifted in on ledge roads. Somethought was given to bringing dogteams up from Aspen, but the dangerwould still be there, as slides wererunning constantly. Supervisory peo-ple decided that the risk of sendingmen in there was too great. It was a good, real-life illustrationof our well-known statement of prin-ciple that No job is so important 248 Bell Telephone Magazine WINTER
Text Appearing After Image:
The Sno-Cat is todays answer to the challeyige of the steep ajtd snowy slopes and passes and no service is so urgent that wecannot take time to perform our worksafely. When snowslide conditions becamesomewhat less hazardous, bulldozerswere called in and set to work fromboth ends of the closed section, clear-ing out the road. It was slow busi-ness, and dangerous too. Slides werestill a threat, and with almost con-tinuous snow storms, roads drifted inbehind the bulldozers. Finally, after 58 days of work andwait, of advance and retreat, thecrews reached opposite sides of thethree-mile section covered by McCor-mack Slide. Oh yes, these slidesrun in the same places every year and have names—nicknames, even—and there is much spirited wageringon when this one or that one willrun, that is, come thundering downa mountain carrying everything be-fore it, snapping off trees like match-sticks. McCormack Slide is alwaystoo dangerous to be covered in anyway but afoot and carefully. Thatwas done
