Text Appearing Before Image:
ingle secretary can operate themduring slack periods. Quiet operation is another advantageof the lA System. The only sound heardfrom the equipment is the tone signal ofan incoming call. The volume of the sig-nal is automatically reduced when thesecretaries are handling more than onecall—as, of course, they do during busyperiods. On present switchboards the caller must wait for the ringing cyclebefore the secretary can answer; with thelA System, a call can be answered anytime after the lamp lights. Simplicity ofoperation is an important feature of thenew system. New secretaries, with noprevious experience, have learned to op-erate the console quite acceptably afteronly one hour of training. The averagetelephone answering bureau can presentlyhandle 80 to 85 clients on a single switch-board. It is entirely practicable to handlefrom 95 to 100 clients on a lA console.Attractive design may not be directlyfunctional, but indirectly it is certainlyso. The lA console comes in four colors. 58

The IA Telephone Answering System in trial installation: a quiet, pleasant place to work. The new, compact consoles are easier to use and more attractive than present equipment. and its compact good looks adapt it wellto modern interior decoration. This notonly enhances the appearance of the an-swering bureau, but also—in conjunctionwith the lAs silent operation—actuallyhelps increase the secretaries efficiencyby making the operating room a quietand pleasant place in which to work. ^ The lA has, of course, been testedin the field. On July 30, 1963 a sys-tem was installed in Wes Steele and PaulRohrichs Answering, Incorporated, inSilver Spring, Maryland. In this trialinstallation, three consoles replaced thefour switchboards formerly used. When the field trial period was over, Mr. Steelesaid he considered it a major step for-ward in answering service equipment, andthat he intended to have it installed, wherever practicable, in his other offices. The telephone answering service bu-reau
