ardor other post of duty during a severe earthquake. Switchboard in Contortions Loyalty to public service again came to the surface whenthe earthquake struck. At Long Beach, the Bell System longdistance office was being operated by about twenty girls. Allout-going calls from the city are handled by this center. Whenthe shock came they stood back while the switchboard appearedto go into contortions. The lights went out for eighteen min-utes, but the operators stuck to their posts handling calls forhalf an hour. Later they were directed to leave the buildingfollowing subsequent shocks. Protests from the girls arose,but they finally left the board. The Traffic Superintendent remained and completed someemergency calls received over the switchboard and from LongBeach city officials and others who came into the operatingroom to place calls. Emergency calls were put through forthe police, hospitals, Army, Navy, Marines, the NationalGuard and to the press. At about 8:00 p.m. the operators 146
