Telephone service has many forms. Some are famil-iar, like the coin collector (above, left) making hisrounds of public telephone booths, and, quite liter-ally, bringing in the money. Many are less visible,like the necessary operation of counting the dailyinflow of coins (above) and maintaining and repair-ing the coin boxes themselves. Some are a voice inyour ear, like the information operator (left), v/ho isequipped to help you find, quickly and efficiently,numbers not covered by your local directory. >f^^

The telephone company is anentity, it is also an integral partof that incredibly complex andresponsive machine, the totalBell System network. But mostof all the company, and indeedthe System, is the sum of manydifferent human skills. The jobat hand may be the splicer re-pairing a cable, underground,at midnight; a switchman feel-ing the pulse of the central of-fice, testing the lines, aroundthe clock, as the calls gothrough; the girl watching theprint-out of bills from computertape for fast and accurate bill-ing. Or it could be any one ofmany other people performingscores of other jobs all of whichhave one thing in common —the strong seasoning of humandedication which makes theword service so meaningful,so much a part of the way of lifeof telephone men and women.
