The out was that finesteel slivers adhered to the plugs,so that when they were inserted inthe switchboard jacks they shortedout the jack contacts. The plugcleaning was necessarily followed bya thorough job of jack cleaning. Another off the record yarn tellsof an equipment attendant who washaving trouble with a bay of equip-ment which contained a good manyrelays. Each morning, when he cameto work, he found an accumulationof trouble reports which past ex-perience told him were caused bysticky relays in the bay. Finally,he resolved to take drastic action;and each morning thereafter he hitthe bay a wallop with a short lengthof two-by-four.
