On Watch—All Over the Map Editors note: Since the first of the year, groups of telephone people havebeen able to witness at Long Lines Headquarters a dramatized presentationof the functions of the Traffic Control System. To give readers of theQuarterly some idea of these informative demonstrations, the followingarticle was prepared by one of the dramatis personnae. CONSIDER the sad case of Argus, that personage in Greekmythology who had a hundred eyes, quarreled with ajealous goddess, and forthwith found his prized orbs destinedto serve forever as decorations on the peacocks tail. PoorArgus of Mount Olympus was endowed to watch everything, but seems to have found no occupation worthy of his talents. Argus would feel more at home in the Bell System today.Or perhaps not. For he would discover mere mortals outdoinghim in both fancy and fact as they watch over long distancetelephone circuits. This responsibility enters into the jobs ofa great many telephone workers, of course: testboardm
