f progress describedunder Fire Control Radar for theFleet, improved models for eachfunction followed one after another.With the great variety of functions,this led to a volume of effort at BellLaboratories equal to its combined ef-fort for ship, submarine, and groundradars. Weight and space are at a highpremium in all airplanes—more insome than in others. Even the giantB-29 could not accept an equipmentfor any function, no matter how im-portant it was, until its weight andsize had been shaken down to thelowest level possible. All airplaneradar developments, therefore, had incommon a highly important require-ment of minimum weight and sizewhich did not exist in radar develop-ments for other scenes of service.The interests of minimum weight andvolume are better served the shorterthe wave length employed. A RADAR ANTENNA, installed in a turret under the fuselage ot a B-29 bomber, scans the target area models operated at wave lengths asmall fraction of this. The Laboratories first airplaneradar development was done in co-operation with the Radiation Labora-tory. It was for the night fighterplane in its interception and attackof enemy bombers. The RadiationLaboratory carried the project to theresearch model stage, and underArmy contract Bell Laboratories car-ried the development forward to aproduction design. The latter workbegan in March, 1941, and WesternElectric produced the first equipmentsin the second quarter of 1942. These equipments were not usedfor their intended purpose, but were modified for ship and plane use tocombat the submarine menace alongthe Atlantic during 1942. During theearly months of the submarine war-fare they were the only equipmentsavailable for some aspects of ouranti-submarine action.
