pplication it pro-vides the means for a quick large-scale survey of geological structureof the earths surface, and therebymay provide clues for the discovery of new oil and mineral deposits. Forthis sort of work it has been com-bined with SHORAN, a radar mappingdevice, and special mapping cameras. A MAGNETIC FUZE for mines was an-other development of the Laborato-ries, and about 12,000 mines equippedwith it were dropped by airplane inshallow water in Japanese shippinglanes. The magnetic fuze was basedon the Laboratories earlier inventionof permalloy, an alloy which is re-markably sensitive to magnetism. Asa mine lay on the bottom, the perm-alloy in the fuze responded to thechange in magnetism when a shippassed within lethal range. The fuzewas so designed that it could count offand pass the first ship or several shipsin a convoy and blow up the next oneto pass. Mines equipped with thisfuze destroyed about 300,000 tonsof shipping, and many more tonswere neutralized by fear of the mines.
