The broker using the Exchanges TelephoneQuotation Service gets information from acomputer that will also feed the Exchangesticker system. Data is available for any of the1,600 stocks listed on the Exchange. Theservice is geared to handle as many as 300calls at once from member subscribers, withno delays. To obtain an immediate quotation on anystock, a broker simply dials the number as-signed to the particular stock. Within a frac-tion of a second, the computer identifies thestock, locates the latest trading data, assem-bles the response from a recording drumvocabulary of 126 words (the computervoice) and sends it back to the inquirer. Depending on message length, the Tele-phone Quotation Service is capable ofhandling up to 400,000 calls daily, providingbid-ask and last sale information. The aver-age announcement time is six seconds.

The crossbar type switchingequipment was specially tailored to meetthe needs of the Exchange by telephonecompany engineers. The Quotation Service uses Bell SystemData-phone data communications equipmentto convert phone dial impulses into codelanguage the computer can accept. A com-puter then translates the language, througha Voice Assembler unit, into an audible mes-sage, which is spoken a split-second later. The system is virtually errorless, in thatthe computer automatically checks all infor-mation processed.
