The long-range objective is to enable any telephone user in this country and Canada to reach any other simply by dialing the call increasingly difficult to maintain serv-ice economically over this large areaby handling the calls on the presentbasis. When the centralized auto-matic accounting equipment is avail-able, next fall, customers will dial thecalls they want and accounting datafor each call will flow automaticallyinto the new equipment while thedialed call speeds on directly to thecalled telephone. Pending the de-velopment of automatic means foridentifying each calling telephone, anoperator will have to obtain that in-formation from the cus-tomer and route it intothe centralized equip-ment—a matter of onlya few seconds.
