A major aspect of this study involvedthe use of a number of techniques de-signed to assess the individuals skills ona number of tasks. These included inter-views, paper-and-pencil tests of abilities,observations of behavior in groups understress, an individual work project, andspecially constructed tests of personality. The first assessment center of the Man-agement Progress Study involved collegegraduates recently hired by the MichiganBell Telephone Company and was heldin that state during the Summer of 1956.After witnessing the assessment center inoperation, management people in theMichigan Company questioned whethera program of this type might assist in theselection of Plant Department first lineforemen from the ranks of their non-management employees.
