Information received at the Center fromthese networks would signal any attack onthe continent. From the Center, NORADwould alert retaliatory forces and civil de- 66 fense agencies; it would direct the battle, de-ploy defensive weapons and maintain com-munications with Washington and other keypoints. Built within the mountain, in a maze ofchambers and tunnels will be eleven steelbuildings mounted on huge steel springs todissipate the shock of a nuclear hit, alongwith 1,300 feet of protective granite over-head. The entire complex is connected tothe outside by two access tunnels which canbe sealed off by blast-proof doors weighing30,000 pounds each. If an attack came,separate water, food and power supplieswould allow the Center to operate for manyweeks. The heart of the Centers communicationswill be the electronic telephone switching

Unlike other privateline Bell System networks, which transmitinformation over specific point-to-pointroutes, two-way communication from switch-ing centers in NORADs eight regions wouldcontinue to funnel into the Center over avariety of alternate routes, should one ormore routes be destroyed. Electronicmemory banks would automatically scanthe network and select open paths. The Centers electronic switching systemwill be connected, through associated tollequipment, by multiple cable and microwaveroutes. For further diversity, these will beable to enter the mountain via several en-trance points.
