ned thatCostigan was not restricted to thatlist and, in fact, would probably gofar beyond it. ^ Let us now set the scene. The audi-torium of the New York TelephoneCompanys headquarters. On a small, lowstage, brilliantly and balefully illumi-nated by studio lights, is a small table with two chairs and two microphones. At one mike is Costigan, who is in ani-mated conversation with a television cam-eraman some ten feet away. A technicianat a control panel is talking to someonevia a telephone headset. Thick cablessnake across the stage. Staff memberswalk back and forth, talking to Costiganand the technicians. Outside the pools oflight are about 20 spectators—watchingthe proceedings closely. This is the scene which confrontedeach student as he stepped into our simu-lated studio. After each inlerview, a critique was ^ivenby A. Burke Crotty, radio-TV veteran whohas similarly coached many public figures. 53 Youre on CAMERA! a somewhat crooked, but not unfriendlysmile, Costigan opened the show: Welcome Mr. Whithorn. I want toask you tonight about this all-digit dial-ing plan youre about to inflict on uspoor customers. And so the questioning was under way. Each student was interviewed in thismanner for an average of eight minutesand, as we found out, a professional likeCostigan can ask a lot of questions ineight minutes. As the interviews pro-gressed they were video-taped and whenour nine students had completed theirstints, the tapes were re-rolled and playedback immediately. At this point Mr.Crotty took over. ■ As each mans interview was played back on a 24-inch TV monitor, he sat next to Mr. Crotty and was given a blow-by-blow critique of his performance.Among points covered by the veteran di-rector were personal mannerisms (Keepyour hands out of your pockets.)
