on to trytraining people for radio and TV appear-ances has to do with the way Americansare being informed. Last year the ElmoRoper organization reported that a ma-jority (55 per cent) of us said that tele-vision and radio were our primary sourcesof news. Most of us also read papers, ofcourse. But we are getting the news firstI and our primary impression of what itmeans) from radio and TV. One important re.sult of all this hasbeen a sharp rise in the number of re-quests by stations for telephone peopleto appear on the air to represent theircompanies positions in matters of cur-rent interest or controversy. These developments had been dulynoted by many Bell System press rela-tions men and women. Among otherplaces, they were discussed at meetingsof the Metropolitan Radio-TV Commit-tee, a press relations group representingBell Companies with headquarters in theNew York City area. Out of these dis-cussions emerged a joint New York Tele-phone Company-A.T.&T. radio-TV train-ing workshop.
Text Appearing After Image:
The workshop proved that professional guidance, exemplified here by Tom Costigan, notedradio and TV reporter, can he of great help to those who may he asked to appear on the air. 50 ■ There are some basic differencesthat should be noted between theprinted press and the electronicpress. One concerns the different impres-sions received by readers, hearers andviewers. Consider for instance, what hap-pens when a telephone man is interviewedfor a story by reporters from newspapers, radio and television. First, the newspaper story which sub-sequently appears will have been influ-enced by a whole series of third parties—the reporter who wrote it; the city edi-tor who handled it; the copy reader whoread it for grammar and style; the newseditor who decided where in the paper toplace it, and even the linotype operatorwho set the type and made the typo-graphical errors (if any). The radio story, on the other hand, will, if aired live, bring to the listenerthe telephone mans exact words, spoken
