here are administrative central office lineson the consoles, up to ten of which can beaccommodated at each position. These lines for the bureaus own use can be du-plicated—or multipled—at each console. The console operates with non-lockingbuttons which are used to answer andhold calls; lamp signals—a flashing lampindicating an incoming call, a steadylamp indicating that the call is answeredand a winking lamp when the call isheld; and an audible signal to alert sec-retaries to incoming calls. ■I Several significant improvementshave been incorporated in the newlA System. A ring control permitseach answering button to be turned sothat the lamp does not light at all, orlights on the first or third ring. Thiseliminates the need to count rings foreach call. Each button on the consoleterminates a specific line which is clearlyidentified, since the designation strip isright beside the button. This providesinstant and easy line identification. Operating room of an answering service bureau today. These switchboards junction well, butthe lA Telephone Answering System will enable many bureaus to do the job more efficiently. new system has a mutual assistance ar-rangement whereby a grouping team-work button permits an answering bu-reau secretary to take calls on adjoiningconsoles without moving from her posi-tion. It also groups up to six consoles sothat a single secretary can operate themduring slack periods. Quiet operation is another advantageof the lA System. The only sound heardfrom the equipment is the tone signal ofan incoming call. The volume of the sig-nal is automatically reduced when thesecretaries are handling more than onecall—as, of course, they do during busyperiods. On present switchboards the caller must wait for the ringing cyclebefore the secretary can answer; with thelA System, a call can be answered anytime after the lamp lights. Simplicity ofoperation is an important feature of thenew system. New secreta
