Weve heard salesmenand sales managers say, It wont work.I have heard it in dozens of cases—butit does work, and once convinced, thesalesman never goes back to old, waste-ful habits. In our own .selling activities,we demand that an appointment be madefor every business .sales contact. We \m\\vdoubled selling time and more than doubled productivity by this one simpleand, I repeat, courteous technique—cour-teous because the prospect does appreci-ate it and says so. Also, and importantly,it builds the salesmans image in the pros-pects eyes. When appropriate, somesalesmen arrange to have the prospectmake an inventory check prior to thesalesmans visit. Most prospects are quitewilling to do this because usually it savesthem time in the end. The telephone, judiciously used, helps com-bat two of the salesmans oldest and mostpersistent enemies: time and distance.
