He has just made his fourth trip toAfrica in 15 months, and averages over50,000 miles a year in airplanes. A member of A.T.&T.s Long Lines De-partment from 1929 until he joined West-ern Electric in 1958, he was chief engineerof Long Lines Central Area from 1951 to1956 and general staff engineer vmtil hismove to Western. Currently he is man-ager of advance engineering and costs inWesterns Government CommunicationsProjects unit where, among other assign-ments, he has been responsible for systemengineering of communications for theBallistic Missile Early Warning Systemand the DEW Line extension acrossGreenland to Iceland. These assignmentswere prior to his recent experiences inSoutheast Asia and Africa. Having expe-rienced both, he says with conviction thathe much prefers palm trees to icebergs. 47

Tait, author of The ServiceRepresentative beginning on page34, has a rich background of experience inOperations and specifically in the Com-mercial Department to draw upon. Nowassistant vice president in charge of theCommercial Division of the A.T.&T.Operations Department, he has had manyother assignments in this and alliedfields during his Bell System career. In1941 he joined the Chesapeake andPotomac Telephone Company in Rich-mond, Virginia, as a Commercial repre-sentative after having earned his B.S.in Electrical Engineering at VirginiaPolytechnic Institute. He then succes-sively held positions in Engineering andTraffic, becoming general Traffic super-visor in 1953. In 1955-56, he spent a year as a SloanFellow at Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology, where he received the S.M.in Industrial Management.
