Title |
Bell |
||
Description |
English: A small copper alloy crotal bell, complete with hinged mount, with possible tiny remaining flecks of gilding. The bell component has been wrought from a flat sheet, which has been soldered to the narrow shaft with its loop on the end. This loop is gripped by a double loop on the blunt ‘spike’ part, with a rivet passing through the hinge- which still moves freely. The bell part, which has been slightly squashed, has a cross-shaped sound hole. The surface has a dull dark green colour, with a slightly rough surface. However, there are tiny flecks of gold on the bell; this suggests that this bell formed part of a human costume, or maybe horse harness. It is likely to date to the late medieval or early post-medieval period. |
