Title
Bell
Description
English: A cast spherical 'rumbler' bell, made of copper alloy. These bells were worn by both sheep and horses from the 17th to 19th centuries. The bell has a square suspension loop and is divided into two hemispheres. The top hemisphere has two sound holes cut into it. The bottom hemisphere also has two sound holes, connected by a slit. The top hemisphere is undecorated; the lower hemisphere has a grooved sunburst design. The bottom hemisphere is also decorated with a shield-shaped design, set against the slot on the base of the bell. One would expect there to be a letter within this shield but the bell is quite worn so it is difficult to see if this is the case. Parallels for this type of bell can be seen in Bailey, 1999, pp40, fig. 18 and 20 and Bailey, 2000, pp67, fig. 9).
