Description
English: Beaumaris men of the 23rd of Foot who fell in WWI The 23rd of Foot was formed in the year of the Battle of the Boyne. The Regiment, one of only four in the British Army to retain its independence until 2006, won 14 Victoria Crosses. The history of the Royal Welch as a fighting unit extends back to the Battle of Aughrim in 1691. Since then it has fought in the eighteenth century campaigns of Marlborough, the American War of Independence, the wars with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, the Crimean War, the Boer War. the First and Second World War and the Gulf War, as well as serving as peace keepers in Northern Ireland and Bosnia.

On 1st March 2006 the three Welsh infantry regiments combined to form a new regiment – The Royal Welsh. The new title of the Royal Welch Fusiliers is: 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh (The Royal Welch Fusiliers).
