The custom of walking with the Bear is found only in Moldova, on New Year's Eve.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The custom of walking with the Bear is found only in Moldova, on New Year's Eve. Masked men grunt and imitate the bear's swaying and jerking steps, striking the ground hard with their feet. The significance is purification and fertilization of the soil in the new year. The bear has a cult with origins in the Palaeolithic. There is a theory that among the Geto-Dacians ( the ancient tribes living on the territory of nowadays Romania), the bear was considered a sacred animal. The bear seems to have also appeared in the cult of Zamolxis, a Dacian God, its name being derived from the bear's fur (zalmos = bear fur). In Moldova's spirituality, the bear also symbolizes the demon that drives away disease, and it is also the bearer of an apotropaic demon (protecting against evil), which is believed to cleanse the place and space of evil spirits.
