Bead |

Description |
English: A complete midnight blue opaque glass bead. This bead is circular in shape, measuring 12.8mm in diameter and 11.8mm in height. It has a central circular perforation, measuring 2.6mm in diameter. It is smooth but has tiny cracks and indentations on its surface, probably caused by wear over time. It was found in association with many other early Anglo-Saxon artefacts, most of which showed signs of burning. Although this bead does not appear to have been burnt it is still most likely to be early Anglo-Saxon in date and to have been deposited originally in an early Anglo-Saxon grave. Helen Geake writes: Although the findspot would seem to indicate an early Anglo-Saxon date, blue glass beads are common in other periods as well, and the shape of this bead is not typical for blue glass early Anglo-Saxon beads (they are more often annular or clearly wound; Brugmann 2004, 34 and 40-41). From the image it appears to be of translucent glass, however, which is characteristic of an early Anglo-Saxon date. |
