Title
Bead
Description
English: A complete early Anglo-Saxon polychrome glass bead. This bead is fairly large and is circular in shape, it measures 30mm in diameter, is 9.4mm thick and has a central circular perforation which measures 7mm in diameter. The glass is black in colour and has yellow glass inclusions. Around the centre of the edge of this bead there is faint circumferencial zig-zag trail. Dr. Birte Brugmann has examined this bead and believes as a circumferencial trail is present it is most likely to be late Roman or early Anglo-Saxon, dating to the 5th or 6th century (Brugmann personal comm. 9/2003).

An update: Birte Brugmann's book, published in 2004, suggests that this type of dark glass bead with a white or yellow circumferential zig-zag trail are not closely datable as a type; on the Continent they are in use from the late Roman period to the sixth century and in England are found in 5th- and 6th-century graves (p. 31).
