| Description |
English: Beached bird survey, Lund Once a month, volunteers around Shetland set off to check beaches for dead birds. The scheme was set up by Shetland Oil Terminal Environmental Advisory Group (SOTEAG) in the late 1970s, to monitor pollution caused by the then-new Sullom Voe Terminal (SVT).
As it happens, SVT has an enviable pollution prevention record, but the data collected from the surveys has proved extremely useful in monitoring other cause of death for seabirds. So much so, that beached bird surveys have been started (or in some cases restarted) in other parts of Britain and in the Netherlands. The bird here is a Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis), in a relatively intact state for this species, which seems to disintegrate easily. |
