Summary[edit]
DescriptionBayham Old Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 1333998.jpg |
English: Bayham Old Abbey Known as the "Old" abbey to distinguish it from the nearby mansion called Bayham Abbey. The ruins are looked after by English Heritage - well worth a visit. Not many people make it here!
The photo shows the south wall of the abbey church. The bases of the buttresses are pierced by archways to allow the monks to walk round the cloisters. The Abbey was built by the Premonstratensian Order of canons in the early 13th Century, and was one of the first monasteries to be dissolved by Henry VIII. |
