According to details published by Hoboken Historical Museum, the photo may have been taken on August 12, 1944. A similar photo in their collections described the scene as follows:
"Tons of water are poured into Pier 4 at Hoboken, as smoke and flames consume the 1,100 foot war supply depot. More than 600 fire fighters were casualties of the blaze which destroyed millions of dollars worth of war materials."
