Summary[edit]

Description
English: Batsford House Batsford House was built between 1889 and 1892 following the inheritance of the estate by Bertram Mitford in 1886 on the death of his cousin who was the second Earl Redesdale. He did not care for the Georgian House on his belief the Georgian Architecture was on the whole a great misfortune for Britain, so he built himself a mock Tudor one instead using the architect Ernest George. This was a great misfortune for his family's sake.

The parklands surrounding the house include the renowned arboretum developed in 1860s by Algernon Bertram Freeman - Mitford (later the 1st Lord Redesdale). The house itself was the home of the famous Mitford sisters.

The house was sold in 1919 to Gilbert Alan Hamilton Wills, later the 1st Lord Dulverton. In 1983 the charitable Batsford Foundation was created by the Frederick Anthony Hamilton Wills, the 2nd Lord Dulverton and given the house and the arboretum in order to ensure its future. Following his death the house was bought back into the Wills family from the Foundation and re-privatised for use by the family of the current Lord Dulverton.
